Meet Our Honor Roll: Carl Eugene Ogilvie

Carl Eugene Ogilvie was born in Evart, Michigan, on February 18, 1920, the son of Eugene and Myrtle Sypher Ogilvie. His family moved to Oakland County when he was a child. Carl attended Rochester High School and graduated in the class of 1939. Before the war, he worked at National Twist Drill & Tool Company.

In December 1941, just after the Pearl Harbor attack, Carl enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was trained as a machinist’s mate. He was stationed on the fleet oiler USS Merrimack. The Merrimack was part of the Atlantic fleet and was tasked with fueling the escort ships that protected Allied convoys from German U-boats.

At the end of the war, Carl was transferred to the fleet oiler USS Caliente, which operated in Tokyo Bay, supporting the Allied occupation forces in Japan.

After the war, Carl worked in the retail grocery business. He and his wife eventually settled in California.

Carl Eugene Ogilvie died at age 75 on June 16, 1995, and was laid to rest in San Jose, California.
