Clyde Henry Scheppe

Clyde Henry Scheppe was born in Mackinaw City, Michigan, on July 12, 1913, the son of Charles and Mae Zimmerman Scheppe. Clyde grew up in Mackinaw City, but by 1940, he lived in Avon Township with his father and was employed as a farm laborer.

In September 1942, Clyde entered the U.S. Army. After training in Tennessee, he was sent overseas to Ireland and then to France. He was assigned to the 28th Infantry Regiment of the 8th Infantry Division. On July 12, 1944, while participating in the Allied advance in the vicinity of Vesly, France, Clyde was wounded by a hand grenade and died of his injuries the following day. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.

Clyde Henry Scheppe died at age 30 on July 13, 1944, and was laid to rest at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, Normandy, France.
