Adrian F. Newberry

Adrian F. Newberry (also sometimes spelled Newbury) was born May 16, 1923, the son of Alvah and Lilian Rikerd Newberry. The Newberry family lived on Castell Street in Rochester, and Adrian attended Rochester schools.

In December 1941, Adrian entered the U.S. Marine Corps and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 23rd Marines. His unit was sent to the Mariana Islands in the Pacific Theater, where Adrian was killed in action during the fight for Saipan on June 17, 1944. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.

Adrian F. Newberry died at age 21 and was buried in the 4th Marine Division Cemetery on Saipan, but his remains were recovered in 1949 and laid to rest at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii.
