Robert Clayton Werth was born in Rochester, Michigan, on June 17, 1920, the son of Ferdinand and Julia Dopp Werth. He was known as Bob to family and friends. Bob attended Rochester High School and graduated in the class of 1938.
Before the war, Bob worked at Pontiac Motors. He entered the U.S. Navy in October 1942 and married Marjorie Craven in December 1942. Bob was then stationed aboard LST-1016, which operated in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.
In June 1947, Bob joined the Rochester Police Department as a law enforcement officer. He wore a badge for 39 years, advancing to sergeant in 1950 and rising to the rank of Chief of Police in 1964 upon the retirement of Chief Sam Howlett. Bob retired as Chief of Police in 1986, with the respect of fellow officers and citizens alike. He remained in the Rochester area in retirement, enjoying the opportunity to pursue his interest in antiques and participating in several community organizations, including the American Legion, the Fraternal Order of Police, and First Congregational Church.
