Organized by arrow_forward_ios Rochester-Avon Historical Society
Join the Rochester-Avon Historical Society on Tuesday, May 7 at noon at the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm, 1005 Van Hoosen Rd., Rochester Hills, for a thrilling presentation titled, "Avon at Gettysburg," RAHS member and presenter Chris Brown will discuss how in 1863, Confederate General Robert E. Lee moved his Army of Northern Virginia north into Pennsylvania in what would become a turning point of the Civil War. Among the men of the Union Army of the Potomac to counter the threat were over twenty of whom had connections to Avon/Rochester.

Learn the stories of the Avonites who charged into battle on East Cavalry Field behind a young George A. Custer, the farmers who struggled in the fierce fighting of the Wheatfield, the doctor who performed over 500 surgeries in the battle’s aftermath, the Avon boys who greeted the rebels at the end of Pickett’s Charge, and more. Avon was represented in almost every major element of the Battle of Gettysburg. These are their stories.
